This interactive presentation explores contemporary issues and trends impacting police recruiting, field training outcomes, and retention. Current research will be explored highlighting shifting candidate-pool challenges requiring new approaches.

Best practices will be reviewed related to recruiting strategies, selection processes, field training implementation, retention outcomes, and retirement transition. Major paradigm shifts in job requirements and agency policies will be presented. Challenges emerging from recent events, along with potential solutions, will be discussed.

Law enforcement relies on functional teams. The consequences of dysfunction include turnover, poor officer commitment, and loss of community trust. Strong agency culture and focused leadership development efforts can facilitate functional teams. High performing teams don’t happen by accident; it requires intentional focus on developing trust, courage, commitment, accountability and mission focus. Agencies can help shape the proper culture and cultivate the development of followership and leadership.

But what can agencies do when facing dysfunctional teams in a department? What steps can a Chief take when facing a dysfunctional command staff? This type of dysfunction can become toxic and impact the entire agency. This presentation will leverage Lencioni’s Five Dysfunctions of a Team in the specific context of policing to help diagnose and actively respond to crippling team dysfunction. Understanding threats to the foundations of team trust, fear of confrontation, absence of commitment and accountability, and the failure to focus on goals is critical for leaders to rebuild, or reform, functional teams. Attendees will be provided a framework for avoiding dysfunctional teams in a law enforcement along with strategies to help prevent dysfunction from occuring.

One can get lost among the thousand of models, training approaches, and books related to leadership and influence development. This presentation, developed by leadership trainer and author Dr. Marshall Jones, provides both aspiring and seasoned leaders with an individual-focused approach to understand and take charge of their leadership development. Topics include essentials for genuine leadership, self-awareness, critical concepts of human behavior, and leader-follower relationships. Strategies related to identifying self-assessment tools and how to discover one’s unique leadership pathfinding approach will be shared.

The increasingly complex landscape of policing necessitates strong and stable leadership and management. While leaders can emerge as a natural process of experience and maturity, there are strategic steps agencies can deploy to build a culture that facilitates the development of critical skillsets. Our profession cannot continue to idly wait for leaders to organically emerge or management skills to simply evolve once promotions have been decided. This presentation challenges the traditional status-quo and offers strategies to leverage the power and longevity of a purposely developed culture that encourages, develops, and maintains the influence necessary for a solid and stable foundation for follower and leader development.

Allegations of police racism and implicit boas have been front and center in the media and activist groups the past few years. Implicit bias is a human condition and filters the worldview of everyone in society. This presentation will explore the human behavioral phenomena that impacts implicit bias. Meaningful and practical best practice models for law enforcement will be explored along with strategies for facilitating conversations with community members and the media. The concept of implicit bias in greater society, including the media, will also be explored.

Intended for aspiring law enforcement supervisors. Ideal for Field Training Officers, Corporals, and those preparing for promotion. This interactive course reviews the realities of leadership, supervision, and continued followership while shedding light on the realities of work life once the Sergeant stripes hit the sleeves. Topics include self-awareness, critical components of rapport and trust, follower behavior, genuine leadership, power, politics, and managing teams.

This interactive course helps the participant realize what it means to lead while understanding their critical role and responsibility to their agency and the profession. Understanding key individual and organizational behaviors are essential for a robust set of tools for Sergeants. Specific focus on understanding and managing relationships, communication behaviors, dealing with problem behavior, performance management, goal setting, leadership and management models, courage to leverage conflict, and addressing dysfunctional teams will be explored.

This one-day class focuses on “the shift” from taking care of your people as a sergeant to leading at the mid-management level. Lieutenants need to mentor sergeants yet hold them accountable to take care of their officers. They must also be mindful of their role as the agency steward requiring reframing and acquiring additional skillsets. (one through five day options).
